This is it!

For a couple of weeks now, I've been able to finally open up about what is going on in my life. I had to wait until I figured things out and told the people who needed to know, but now that's sorted, I'm ready to burst! So here it is - I'm moving to New.port.

I quit my job. I'm packing up my Bos.ton apartment and by the end of the summer, I'll be out completely. I found a new job, similar to what I'm doing now which is not ideal, but it is a start and a start is all I have and all for which I could have hoped. I have a great apartment, somewhat nicer than what I have in Bos.ton for less money, and I'll be living with one of my best friends, AJ. He's the handsome devil here with me.

We've been friends since my sophomore year at S@lve. He was a freshman and I was friends with his RA. I tutored him a bit and we hung out a little. One night, when he was hammered, I drove him to get pizza and he made fun of my PJ pants. It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. I've been pretty lucky with roommates and know he'll be no exception. We have a lot in common, like taste in movies, TV, and music and we share some friends. One way we're different is our preference in athletic teams, but that's tolerable. Our work schedules are different (I'll be working evenings and he'll be working nights) and I'm hoping we find time every once in a while to hang out.

I don't think I've been this happy in a year or so. I mean, I've had spots of happiness, you know, good days and fun times, but this is the first thing that has made me legitimately happy for an extended period of time in a while. I never planned on staying in Bos.ton; I came here for grad school and, after I finished, I thought about leaving, but I had no where to go and nothing to do, so I stayed here. This past year of saddness was worth it because I did something on my own and I forced myself to face things. I recall the thoughts JK Rowl*ng shared in her commencement address at Har.vard, which I was lucky enough to call my own. She talked about fearing failure. I fear failure. All the time. I will look back on this experience and feel it was not failure, but an experience which forced me to face my fear of failure. Moving to New.port might not fix everything, but it's something I want to do and when AJ got his new job and talked about staying in RI, I thought it was the perfect time to make a move in the right direction. I felt like I was finally doing something for myself, finally putting my own happiness first. I think that sound awful, like I think I'm some sort of martyr, which I assure you is not the case.

As for this blog, I've tried to do the blog thing before, but this time I want to make it work because I want to savor this experience. I want this to be a great time in my life and I want so badly for it to work. Even if it doesn't end up making me happier, I just want to make it work as best I can. Newport has been so important to me the last few years. S@lve was one of the greatest experiences ever; I became this person I really enjoyed being and I let it absorb me.

I let New.port wash over me and be a place where I could be that person. I met amazing people, did ridiculous things, and learned so much. I used that knowledge and the challenge of a friend and gained the opportunity to study at one of the greatest schools in the country which brought me to Bos.ton. As such, I really can't say I regret coming here, because I don't. I'm just ready for the next thing.

I've decided to name this blog after two songs that I associate with my time at S@lve and New.port. I think it's fitting. For those of you not familiar with these songs, I've pasted them here:
In My Life by The Beat.les
There are places I'll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all
But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
In my life I love you more

Island in the Sun by Wee.zer
Hip hip
Hip hip
Hip hip
Hip hip
When you're on a holiday
You can't find the words to say
All the things that come to you
And I wanna feel it too
On an island in the sun
We'll be playing and having fun
And it makes me feel so fine
I can't control my brain
Hip hip
Hip hip
When you're on a golden sea
You don't need no memory
Just a place to call your own
As we drift into the zone
On an island in the sun
We'll be playing and having fun
And it makes me feel so fine
I can't control my brain
We'll run away together
We'll spend some time forever
We'll never feel bad anymore
Hip hip
Hip hip
Hip hip
On an island in the sun
We'll be playing and having fun
And it makes me feel so fine
I can't control my brain
We'll run away together
We'll spend some time forever
We'll never feel bad anymore
Hip hip
We'll never feel bad anymore
No no
We'll never feel bad anymore
No no
No no
No no

Since I've written volumes, I think I'll stop now. After all, I have lots to do to prepare for my life on an island in the sun :-)
